Yvelines is a department in the Ile-de-France region. The eastern part of the department and the northern part that runs along the River Seine are part of the Paris metropolitan area. However, the rest of the department is quite rural, vast parts of the department are in fact covered by the Forest of Yvelines. The most famous landmark in the Yvelines department is surely the Chateau de Versailles. The Chateau really must be seen to be believed. It started life as a hunting lodge but through the years was developed by successive kings to include the model of French landscape gardening, the King’s Opera House and of course, The Hall of Mirrors. However, this is far from all Yvelines has to offer, there is a great wealth of Châteaux, historic buildings and over forty museums as well as the homes of famous writers and composers such as Zola and Debussy.
